Market Updates

• Record high ocean freight spot rates ex-Asia have seen a further major hike this week, including rises of nearly 40% this week to the US, as a month of port restrictions and congestion at Yantian and other south China ports worsen container shipping’s already severe global capacity and equipment shortages.

• Logistics across the US continue to be challenged by lack of drivers, lack of trucks for the loads, etc. Some bulk carriers are refusing long hauls with an empty back haul (think TX to Ohio for example or Chicago to California). They are refusing the loads.

• Ports continue to be very congested. Containers have been sitting in port and received, but due to the trucking issues, they are unable to get the material to warehouses.

• PE and PP demand continues to be very strong. PP consumer and industrial demand is outstripping supply and expected to remain very tight (especially generic) into Q4.

• Hurricane season has begun. The first US landfall was last week (Claudette) and fortunately avoided the critical petrochemical complexes. Some manufacturers have put out a “hurricane preparedness letter” in anticipation of another challenging season of weather-related dislocations.

American-Made Thioester Antioxidants from Evans Chemetics

In the midst of COVID-19 shutdowns and global shipping issues, many conversations have centered around the benefits of sourcing domestically produced polymer additives.

Unfortunately for thermoplastic formulators and purchasers, for many additive chemistries, there are too few or zero realistic alternatives to importing.

Barentz represents Evans Chemetics, which proudly produces all of their thioester antioxidants, including DSTDP and DLTDP, in Waterloo, New York.

UV-3638 Is the Strongest UV Screener for PET Packaging

Fluorescent bulbs in retail environments emit a nonzero UV component that can degrade both the plastic bottles themselves, as well as the products inside of the bottles. UV-3638 is the strongest UV screener available on the market.

This material can be incorporated into PET packaging to prevent discoloration in photosensitive foodstuffs, cleaning chemicals, and other retail goods that sit on shelves for extended periods. Unlike other absorbers on the market, high loadings of UV-3638 can be used without imparting a yellow tinge to the PET. DXSORB UV-3638 has an FCN number allowing food contact use up to 1.0% in PET containers, under Conditions of Use C-G.
