Due to its volatility and low boiling point, dichloromethane (DMC) makes a useful chemical energy source either when used in small quantities or when aerosolized. In order for DMC to be aerosolized effectively though, it must be chemically stabilized prior to use in order to control the release of energy. It has also become one of the most frequently used replacements in aerosol spray cans for environmentally harmful chlorofluorocarbons after new environmental regulations banned their use. Furthermore stabilized, DMC is also one of the primary blowing agents used in the production of the slabstock PU foam used in most furniture or padding and cushioning. Stabilized DMC is ideal for the foam manufacturing process as it is a stable solvent that evaporates during production. Moreover, due to its high stability and low boiling point, it helps to control the reaction temperature to prevent burning or scorching of the foam during the blowing and molding process.

An organic compound that is both highly flammable and highly volatile, ether anhydrous (dry ether) is a commonly used solvent in laboratories, and is also used in in various types of engines as a starter fluid. Historically, ether was used as a general anesthetic until more stable and far less flammable drugs became available. It also has a historical use as a recreational drug due to its ability to cause intoxication. Once referred to as sweet oil of vitriol, ether was originally produced by the distillation of ethanol and sulfuric acid. Industrially, anhydrous ether is used in the production of plastics such as cellulose acetate. Even when anhydrous, ether is still highly flammable and volatile, and extreme care should be taken when using or transporting this volatile material. Vapors from compounds containing ether are nearly as flammable as the substance itself, making strong safety and handling protocols a must both in the lab and in industrial settings.

This organic compound has two primary uses commercially and industrially: raw material for manufacturing polyester fibers, and making antifreeze. Ethylene glycol is colorless, odorless, and sweet-tasting with a syrupy consistency. It is moderately toxic if consumed. This compound is produced by combining ethylene with ethylene oxide and water. After an acid or base catalyst is added, ethylene glycol is produced when acidic or a neutral pH is achieved with a large excess of water. This method generates the greatest amount of ethylene glycol per reaction. Due to its exceptional energy transfer properties (pure ethylene glycol has half the specific heat capacity of water), ethylene glycol is used in 50 percent concentrations in liquid cooling systems installed in everything from automobiles to custom computer cooling kits. It is also a key component in chilled water outdoor misting air conditioners used at restaurants and clubs that offer outdoor dining or musical performances.
